Critical analysis of "song:Go and Catch a Falling Star"by john Donne

 Introduction:

                                    John Donne's poem "Go and Catch a Falling Star" is a thought -provoking poem that basically explores the themes of impossibility,human imperfection,and critic on fair women.This is basically a misogynistic approach which explores the idea of female fidelity and love.

Structure and Form:

                                                    The poem is structured in three stanzas with varying line lengths and has complex rhyme scheme.Rhyme scheme of each stanza is "ABABCCDDD".This irregular structure shows the unpredictability of ideas which Donne explores in his poems.The poem's rhythm is playful,but it balances it's ironic tone with philosophical musings.

Themes:

1. Impossibility of certain tasks:   

                                                         The poem begins with impossible challenges which symbolizes the human limitations and impossibility of certain tasks.This is basically the central theme of poem.

2.Futility of seeking perfection:

                The poem reflects humanity futile pursuits of unattainable and impossible goals, suggesting a universal truth of imperfection.

Tone and diction:

  • The tone of the poem is satirical, ironic and somewhat witty.
  • Donne uses playful diction with sharp undertones to critique societal and personal ideals and the words like "FALLING STAR", MANDRAKE ROOT ",and "Strange Sights"adds to the poem's fantastic and impossible imagery,boosting its metaphysical character.

Literary devices:

                      This poem is rich in fantastical imagery. For instance,

2.Alliteration:

                      Donne uses alliteration for specific purposes such as emphasis and musicality.

3. Hyperbole:

          The poet uses hyperbole and exaggeration to emphasize the impossibility of certain tasks.

The whole poem is metaphorical . Donne's poem  shows the unattainable tasks by these metaphors.

         This is very effective and contemplative poem which explores multiple themes .This poem depicts unique structure, form ,tone and diction.Different literary devices add to the beauty of this poem.
